Christmas in Switzerland

Christmas in Switzerland

Love at First Sit…

We were visiting friends on Mercer Island, across the bay from Seattle. Our plan for the day was to visit the museum and some of the galleries in “downtown” Mercer Island, before flying back to Switzerland. So it was that we landed in The Island Gallery in Bainbridge Island. I wasn’t that keen on clothing and jewelry, but the handcrafted furniture caught my eye. “Wow,” I said to Donna, my wife, “try sitting in this one.” She settled in and naturally started stroking the smooth curve of the armrest. We sat, we stroked, we got up, we admired — over and over. And, an idea formed: wouldn’t this furniture — slightly retro, slightly Asian, incredibly elegant — look great in our apartment in the Swiss Alps? Quite a step up from the Ikea couch we had inherited from the previous owners! Two years later, the saga of the custom-built California furniture, two lounge chairs and a loveseat, that we saw in Seattle and brought to Switzerland has become a cherished memory. Along the way we have had the pleasure of getting to know the artist who crafted it. And every day we have the sensual pleasure of sitting in the chairs, stroking and admiring.
